Energy Research Development Fund

The Energy Market Authority (EMA) has set up a $25 million Energy Research Development Fund (ERDF) to provide financial support for the implementation of new and innovative energy solutions to address the following goals:

  1. Diversify Singapore’s energy sources and improve our energy security;
  2. Help achieve Singapore’s energy intensity reduction targets; and
  3. Develop Singapore’s energy industry.

ERDF intends to seek out projects, which are close to deployment and have the potential to provide impactful and tangible results. The funds from the ERDF was used to support proposals for projects submitted through the inaugural Smart Energy Challenge (SEC) launched in November 2009 during the Singapore International Energy Week. The SEC currently provides funding of up to $5 million per project for the development of ideas that address Singapore's energy goals. More than 80 proposals were received from the following three focus areas:

  1. Power Generation
  2. Energy for Transport
  3. Energy Efficiency for Industry

EMA has awarded in October 2010 five Singapore-based consortia a total of up to $10 million in funding as part of the inaugural SEC invitation.
